Obituary of Lambert L Owens, Sr.

Lambert L. Owens, 81, of West Deptford, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 21, 2018.

Lambert Owens, the fourth child of DeWitt and Hazel Owens was born on March 31, 1937.  He lost his mother at the age of 3 and his father remarried Lillian and together they raised the family.  He went to West Philadelphia High School where he was an All City Philadelphia gymnast.  While in his teen years, he became a barber under the guidance of his older brotherDeWitt Jr.  He mastered the art of barbering and became a master barber and along with his brothers, he owned his own barbershop in West Philadelphia.  In 1956, he entered into his beloved United States Marine Corps.  On January 3rd 1957.  Lambert marries his long time sweetheart Shirley Brown.  From their union, they had four children Lambert Lamar Owens Jr., Tyrone Owens (deceased), Cheryl Denise Owens, Marcus Garvey Owens.  After he left the military, he continued barbering and also worked at GE (General Electric).  Then, he found his dream job as an insurance agent at Union Central Life and later, New York Life, where he made his career.  He received many awards and was in Black Enterprise Magazine for becoming a member of the Million Dollar Round Table.  He had a passion for jazz music and enjoyed going to jazz clubs such as, the Peps and Showboat.  He enjoyed sweets, the bass guitar, dancing, chess, and watching television, especially the history channel.  He enjoyed his war stories and shows involving cowboys.  Throughout his determination, he made many achievements and would never take "no" for an answer.  He was definitely a fighter and a go-getter up until the very end and always believed that if it was something he wanted, he could get it.  He was great support system for his grandchildren picking up and dropping thm off from school and after school activities.  He would leave an hour early to get the same parking spot so they always knew where he was and if someone else had that parking spot, it was a problem so he would stand outside of the car just to make sure his grandchildren knew he was there.  He was preceded in death by his parents, DeWit Owens Sr., Hazel Owens and Lillian (stepmother), his son Tyrone Owens, his siblings, the late DeWitt Jr., the Late Sherman, and the late Helen.  Lambert is survived by his wife, Shirley M. Owens (nee Brown).  Devoted Dad of Lambert L. Owens, Jr., Cheryl D. Owens-Lundy (Anthony), and Marcus G. Owens.  Cherished Pop Pop of Amber N. Owens, Cherisse C. Lundy, Toni C. Lundy and Brooklyn A. Owens.  Treasured great Pop Pop of Isaac L. Flythe.
