Things I will always remember about Kathy Green.
It did not matter what time of day or night you showed up at her house, she would offer to make a pot of coffee or cook something.
I don’t know where the nickname Sam came from, but I know that when Tom called her that, it made her happy.
She had really, really, really strong opinions about things that you wouldn’t think anyone would care much about, let alone feel strongly about. But she did. And she let you know about it. Often. Her distain for certain colors of roses or types of flowers, for example.
Her ability to talk without taking a breath was truly a gift. There’s only one other person I have known who even came close to having such a gift and he called Kathy “Mom.”
She knew a ton of Amish home remedies. I’ve had onions in my socks and potatoes against my forehead in an effort to treat various ailments.
She was convinced that sitting on concrete caused hemorrhoids and, to this day, if I ever have to sit on a curb, it’s all I ever think about.
She got up earlier than any person I have ever known.
She loved Easter and the family’s gathering at Red Bank Battlefield. Her brother would pelt the sisters with peanuts as they helped their grandchildren collect grab them and other treats.
She kept a journal of her cross-country trip to Alaska with her parents.
She worked as a switchboard operator. She would make endless jokes about working at the truck stop. At one job, on Democrat Rd., she was attacked by geese. Pretty sure Kathy won, though.
She taught us how to dance to the Double Dutch Bus.
She loved to go to yard sales with her sisters and her negotiation skills on the lawn were fierce.
She adored her grandchildren and family always came first.
