Obituary of Thomas William McCook

McCOOK, Thomas W., Sr. of Deptford on March 14, 2008. Aged 88 years. Tom was a devoted family man with quick wit, warm smile and good heart. Tom was born in the Germantown section of Philadelphia in 1919, the 5th son of the late Alexander and Matilda McCook. He was a graduate of Germantown High School and Strayers School of Business. Playing semi-pro football for the Mt. Airy League in the late 1930's was something that he enjoyed telling stories about. Tom proudly served his country as a 1st Class Petty Officer in the US Navy during WWII and was a member of the American Legion Post #424, Deptford. His talent with woodworking is demonstrated throughout Gloucester County. Tom worked as a custom builder and building contractor; owning McCook and McDermott Builders from 1947 through the mid 1990's. Involvement with his community was important to Tom. His service to Deptford Township varied; as committeeman, chairing the M.U.A. and serving on the Housing Commission. In addition to his involvement with Deptford, Tom also served on the Gloucester County Regional Planning Committee. Spending time fishing off the coast of Fortesque on the Delaware Bay is something that brought great joy to Tom. He is the beloved husband of Veronica nee McDermott; devoted father of Thomas, Jr. Angie, Clyde Barb and Linda Jett Steve; loving grandfather of Jennifer, Lindy, Katie, Sean, Corey, Ryan, Stephen and Adam and great grandfather of Kim, Sabastian and Alexis.
