I seem to remember Carl as long as I've been alive. My Dad was such good friends with him and there always was a strong bond between them.
One story is particularly memorable. Several years ago, my Dad asked me to take Carl and George Matteo to Pine Valley for lunch.
When we arrived at Pine Valley, President George Bush was there the first one and he was out of office. President Bush had two Secret Service agents with him at all times. He was very friendly - taling to everyone at the golf club. It soon became apparent that while President Bush was very cordial, he also never stopped moving. In that way, he didn't get trapped talking to one person.
After our lunch, we went into the Pro Shop to buy something. In the pro shop, was President Bush. Carl cornered President Bush and started telling him about his military service when he worked for Eisenhower.
My Dad and I got a kick out of Carl cornering the President under the watchful eye of the Secret Service agents.
I also remember how comfirtable Carl was speaking to the President. That says a lot about Carl.
He was a good friend and he'll be missed.
