Obituary of Clara K. Hand
Clara Kirner Hand, 89, of Deptford, New Jersey, passed away on Saturday, November 23, 2019 surrounded by her loving family.
Legacy
Ms. Kirner joined the library staff at Glassboro State in 1971 as reclassification librarian, completing the monumental task of reclassifying the Savitz collection from Dewey Decimal to the Library of Congress system. In 1975, she assumed responsibility for the Frank Stewart Memorial Collection of New Jersey, containing historical materials, rare books, genealogy, and archives.
Before coming to the College, Ms. Kirner was a teacher and a librarian in the New Jersey public schools. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University and a master’s in library science from Drexel University, Where she was named to Beta Phi Mu, Sigma Chapter. While at Rowan, Clara was a long-time member of the World Education Council and a past president of Phi Delta Gamma, Alpha Zeta Chapter.
She was affectionately known for her sardonic wit, keen insight, and good humor. Her interests include New Jersey history, children's books and collecting unicorns.
Family
She is the beloved wife of 19 years to Ralph S. Hand, Jr. Step-mother of Richard Hand (Anne), Robert Hand (the late Lynn) and Laura Pagano (John) She will be missed by friends and family..
Farewell Tribute
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Clara's viewing on Friday, 10:00 - 11:00 AM at the McGuinness Funeral Home, 34 Hunter Street, Woodbury, NJ where the Funeral Ceremony will follow at 11:00 AM. Interment at Gloucester County Veteran Memorial Cemetery will be private by the request of the family. In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her memory to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Pl, Memphis, TN 38105-www.stjude.org.
