Dear Jenny, Cookie, Aileen, Trishia and Frances,
Our deepest and sincerest heartfelt sympathies go to you all on the death of Uncle Dave.
Since I first met him in 1962 when I lived with you in Earl Ave., I have adored him. Our family was honoured to have him stay with us some years ago and were thrilled to get to know him, having heard so much about him from me.
During my many summers with you in New Jersey, he welcomed me and my friends --there was always a "home from home" for everyone who visited. He spoiled us with his gourmet meals and his hospitality at all times. One had only to express a liking in passing for something in particular and it would appear as if by magic--with only his enigmatic smile betraying that he had done the deed.
Uncle Dave's vocation in life was Aunt Mary and his family--making a beautiful home for you all and catering to Mary's extended family. To me as an 11 year he was a god--up at cockcrow, working all day, coming home and cooking, then building the extension, cap on his head to keep the sun off his smooth golden bald head. I think my footprint is still there where I ran headlong into his freshly laid path.
I learned very early that Dave's bark was worse than his bite--his beautiful, kind, blue eyes always gave him away and that smile was always lurking at the corners of his lips. When he dropped his head shaking it you knew he had run out of steam!
I will never forget Dave. He was the best example of a thoroughly selfless human being, who lived his life for those he loved and never looked for anything in return. He was so gentle--I remember finding him one day in the basement ,upset and caring for a bird with a broken wing. That to me epitomises Uncle Dave- a brilliant, talented, army man who cherished and cared for every living thing.
It was a priviledge to have known, respected and loved Uncle Dave.

The Johnson Family,
Tricia though you will always be PAT to me growing up together in Camden/Pennsauken were the best. Staying one step ahead of the Col. to keep out of trouble was fun?
Yea! The summer we took care of David & the Col. while the rest of the family was in the Mid-west was.......interesting? You bet, those were the days.......The Col. was not a demostrative man but you knew if cared, he did and I did. I will always have a special place in my heart for him, and respect him for his professional work as well as the man, the father. I remember him years ago with David, and knew I saw the real man, father. He will be missed.

To Jenny, Erin, Patricia, Frances & Eileen,
We are thinking of you all at this sad time. You know how much we all adored Dave, and were very saddened to hear he had passed away. Dave always went out of his way for us, as did you all. He always tried to find out what special things you personally liked so he could spoil you with them. Dave was such a kind man - we remember him with great fondness. We know what a loss this is to you, and we are thinking of you. The Felle Family, Dublin.

I have so many memories of the "Colonel", yet I fear I still won't do him justice.
He will always be my "Great, and grand and glorious King tiger", and Cookie and I his baby tigers.
I'll remember the pride he took in everything he did. His beautiful grandfather clocks, his addition to his home, his military career, the wonderful meals he prepared. All his accomplishments are too long to list.
He has taught me many things in my life. Loyalty to your family, generosity amongst friends, keep your priorities straight in life, and to be as fair as possible and not be jaded by opinions of others or your own.
By example, He taught me to do everything the "right" way, not the easy way. I'm still learning that one
I think fondly of his love for his roses, tomato garden, his dogs, woodworking craftsmanship, hot apple pie with vanilla icecream, baking his holiday pies, and jigsaw puzzles.
Even though he is in a much better place, I am selfishly unhappy that he is not still with us. Col. Johnson was a remarkable man, and I will miss my Poppop forever.

Surely, your Mary and my deceased wife, Sue -who loved you greatly- have lifted you up on their angel wings.
Sue and I loved you as a father...
and you cared for us as one.
My rememberances include:
The love and generosity Sue and I received from you.
Your delight with your little Jenny and Cookie and the care you gave to them.
How much you loved turkey! after all, that was all you had to eat for the month following Pearl Harbor
How it frightened you that you might actually have to blow up our 25 year old volkswagon as you often said you should do if Sue and I made a monument of it in our back yard!
Your ability to do anything.
Your marvelous workshop.
Sue's delight in working with you on our house at 659 E. Greenman.
The pain I inflicted on your thumb when I missed the mark with my 5 pound hammer!
Your admonishment that I'd be sorry that I left to move to Louisiana. It was well founded for so many years.
My regret at only visiting you twice after leaving.
My sorrow that you could no longer walk with the dogs.
My joy that I did get to see you - and that I was able to introduce my wife,Ann, to 'the legendary Colonel'-when I was last in the area.
May the peace of Christ be with your soul and your family.
Love,
Jim Ensley

I have never had the pleasure of meeting Col. David Johnson. Though I feel I know him through a friend, his granddaughter, Sinead. To see her sorrow my sympathy does not just go out to her, but to the whole family. My family will offer up their prayers not to the passing, but to the family; and the life of Col. Johnson.
