Reflections of Shirley:
Since Shirley was 16 years my senior, my earliest memories were of her moving from our home in North Philadelphia to West Philadelphia, and the fact that I did not understand why she moved. Subsequent to those recollections, I recall the instances when many of my other female siblings needed to have their hair “done, straightened, permed, etc.” for a special occasion, they or my mother would schedule an appointment with Shirley, for her to travel from West Philly to our home to “do there hair.” Eventually, Shirley taught my mother and some of the others to “do” theirs’ and each others’ hair. Shirley was also briefly employed by a local beautician, which gave her an opportunity to visit us more often. The beautician’s husband was my personal barber from childhood through adulthood, the couple was Mr. and Mrs. Laws. Even after her employment, Shirley visited regularly, which allowed the family in North Philadelphia to become acquainted with Lambert Jr., Cheryl and Marcus.
Due to my graduation from high school, and enrollment and matriculation at Cheyney University during the 1970’s, Shirley and I, to some measure, lost contact with one another. However, at some point during my last few years at Cheyney, Lambert Jr. enrolled at the college. Thus, on the occasions when we would encounter one another on campus, we would discuss family matters. Then Shirley relocated to New Jersey, whereas, upon my graduation from Cheyney, I moved to Delaware, and then Maryland.
However, in 1983 I relocated to New Jersey also. This move, in conjunction with the establishment of the Philadelphia Area Chapter of The Anderson Family Reunion/Convention in 1984, initiated a reconnection with Shirley and myself. As such, I recall the many times I would pick Shiley up and drop her off at her home or the Deptford Mall to attend The Philadelphia Area Chapter, Anderson Family meetings. Moreover, She and Lambert Sr. would reciprocate the favor sometimes. Shirley, as well as myself and other Philadelphia Area family members participated for decades in many of The Anderson Family activities. For example, traveling cross country, to and from the various states where the annual Anderson Family Reunions/Conventions were convened. As well as, the aforementioned local Philadelphia Area Chapter activities. Additionally, an artifact of those activities, particular to Shirley, may be found in the 2 pictures on the inside cover pages (front and rear) of the 1992 Anderson Family Reunion/Convention Program/Souvenir Booklet. On which there are 2 group pictures of the Philadelphia Area Chapter members gathered in front of Shirley’s home. One of the pictures is in the pictorial slide presentation on her obituary page. Shirley also provided child care for my youngest child, Ramadan II during his infancy in the 1990’s.
More recently, as I recollect, is the fact that Shirley began to realize her significance as the matriarch of our siblings upon the passing of our prior matriarch Lorie. For instance, I was involved in a conversation with Shirley at a family event when she matter of factly proclaimed, “I am the matriarch.” To that I was compelled to humbly submit. Thereafter, I attempted to tap into, or probe her mind for her wisdom and experience, by posing oral history questions. I remember an instance, when we attended our grand-niece Alexandria’s wedding in 2018. I presented 2 questions: (1) How did she and Lambert Sr. meet? and (2) How did Lorie and Wyman meet? She expressed that she met Lambert Sr. while visiting her father in West Philadelphia when she was approximately 9 years of age. For Lorie, she met Wyman when they (Lori & Wyman) both were in the same grade 6 class at Ferguson Elementary School in North Philadelphia.
Ergo, because of our age difference, Shirley and I were unable to have the benefit of growing up with mutual childhood experiences. Nevertheless, God produced events, geographic locations etc., which allowed us to have decades of interactions at joyous, and not merely somber occasions.
May God take your soul among the right,
Your Brother Ramadan

Mrs. Owens anointed me part of the family when my mother passed away while I along with her son Lambert Jr. (Best Friend /Brother) was in HS. “I am your Mom now!” she said to me. I became a part of the family. Never will I forget those comforting words to me during my time of sorrow. Mom was a beacon of light and always provided a positive influence throughout our HS years and college. I have been extremely blessed to have had the presence of two loving Mom’s in my life! God Bless you Mom! Continue to smile down on us and keep us safe during these hectic times ahead. Our Heavenly families (Owens -Harris) now will have a great big Family Reunion! Love Robbie

Shirley, I'm so happy I had a chance to speak to you while you were in the hospital and so grateful I had the opportunity to share a virtual visit with you before your transition to Paradise. May Heaven welcome you with open arms. May your family and relatives find comfort knowing you are in a better place. Gonna miss you! Love, your sister, Linda (and niece, Kymberli)
