Obituary of Joseph A. Barry, Jr.

Joseph Anthony "Tony" Barry, 85, of Washington Township, passed away on Thursday, October 14, 2021.

Legacy

Tony was a special needs individual who was inducted into the NJ Special Olympics Hall of Fame in 2011.  He competed in the International Special Olympics at Notre Dame University in 1987.  Over the years, he competed in New Jersey Special Olympics in many sports including, basketball, volleyball, tennis, bowling (many 200+ games) and cross country skiing.

 He was an avid sports fan and life-long fan of Villanova Basketball where his father once captained the team.  He also loved the Flyers, 76ers, Phillies, Eagles, the former Phantoms, where he worked in the locker room, Notre Dame football, where his great-nephew played and Penn State football.  He had limited reading skills but the sports pages were never a problem.

The family wishes to thank the nursing and activities staffs at Jefferson Long Term Health Care Center in Washington Township where he has resided for the last four years, for their extraordinary loving care.  He truly loved them all.

Family

Beloved son of the late Joseph Anthony, Sr. and Mildred Malloy Barry; dear brother of Susan Barry Alacqua (Joseph), and the late Mary Kathleen Quinn (Jack) and Nancy Barry Zane; Tony is survived by 10 nieces and nephews, 29 great nieces and nephews, 14 great great nieces and nephews and many cousins and friends whom he loved and who all remained a significant part of his life.

Farewell Tribute

Due to the Health Crisis, please wear a mask while attending the services at the funeral home and the Church.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Tony's viewing on Friday, 7:00 - 9:00 PM and Saturday, 9:00 - 10:15 AM in the McGuinness Funeral Home, 34 Hunter Road, Woodbury, NJ  08096.  Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 AM in Holy Angels Parish at St. Patrick's RC Church, 64 Cooper Street, Woodbury, NJ.  Interment at New St. Mary's Cemetery, Bellmawr, NJ.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Joseph Barry's name to Special Olympics of NJ, 1 Eunice Kennedy Shriver Way, Lawrenceville, NJ  08648 or the ARC Gloucester, 1555 Gateway Boulevard, Woodbury, NJ  08096.
