Obituary of Reverend Thomas S. Capperella

Reverend Thomas S. Capperella, 82, formerly of Norristown, Pennsylvania, passed away on Sunday, June 26, 2022. 

Legacy

Born and raised in Norristown, Pennsylvania, Fr. Tom was a graduate of Plymouth Whitemarsh High School and then the Philadelphia College of Art.  After graduation, he worked at the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin and then, National Liberty as the Director of Creative Arts. 

In his late 50’s his life took a different path and he began studying at Pope John Paul XXIII National Seminary in Weston, Massachusetts to become a priest.  He was ordained June 2, 2001 in the Diocese of Camden and served such parishes as St. Vincent Pallotti and St. Thomas More and most recently Holy Angels Parish in Woodbury prior to retiring in 2014.  Fr. Tom was easy to talk to, always knew the right thing to say and how to say it.     

A compassionate, loving and witty man, Fr. Tom was devoted to his faith and his family.  He lovingly took care of his mother in her failing health and had a special bond with his nieces and nephews.  He adored them and they were blessed to have him in their lives.  At christenings that he was the celebrant, he would use a shell to sprinkle the holy water on the child’s forehead and he would paint a shell for them as a keepsake.  A talented painter, family members have Fr. Tom’s works of art all around them to bring smiles and warm memories.

Fr. Tom enjoyed traveling to places such as Russia, Egypt, India and hiking the Appalachia Trail.  Stories of his travels were filled with his witty stories and anecdotes that brought laughter as he shared them.

Family

Beloved son of the late Salvatore "Bakey" and Mary D. (nee Campanini) Capperella; loving brother of Marie Tresslar, John (Judy) Capperella, Bob (Jean) Capperella and Tom (Lori) Graf; devoted uncle of Deb Confredo, John Jr., Jay, Joel, Rob and Michael Capperella.  Father Tom is also survived by 22 grand nieces and nephews and many great grand nieces and nephews.

Farewell Tribute

Relatives and friends are invited to attend  Father Tom's visitation on Monday, July 11, 2022, 8:30 - 10:15 AM at Holy Angels Parish Center, 96 Green Avenue, Woodbury, NJ 08096.  Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 AM in Holy Angels Parish at St. Patrick's RC Church, 64 Cooper Street, Woodbury, NJ.  Entombment will take place privately. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Fr. Tom's name to Holy Angels Parish or to an animal charity of the donor's choice.
