I am sorry to hear of Dick’s passing. I worked with him from 1991 – 2002. I agree with other posts – he was quite a character and definitely unforgettable. I hold a lot of respect for the work he did for the refuge and urban habitat conservation at a time when it was not popular. The most touching memory I have was his obvious pride and love for Michelle when she spoke at his retirement party. My prayers and deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

I'm very sad to learn of Dick's death. I got to know him fairly well beginning in 1993 at the John Heinz NWR, where I got hooked on birding and then began leading walks in 1996. I always enjoyed chatting with Dick at volunteer picnics and meetings and stayed in touch with occasional emails. Most recently, during the past year, he sent me information about his employee, James Carroll, the first custodian of the refuge (1973- ), and then a Biological Technician.... I particularly enjoyed Dick's good humor and various stories of his experiences during his many years at Tinicum/Heinz, and memories of those times with him will stay with me. My condolences and best wishes to his family.

We would like to extend our sincere sympathy to Michelle and her Family. I worked along with Dick at the John Heinz NWR for 23 years. He was a true Conservationist. He always had wildlife & the environment's best interest at heart. What I remember most is his love for his Daughter, Michelle and how he would light up when he talked about her. We all pretty much knew every milestone Michelle made from just starting to walk, all the way through graduating college. He was so very proud of her! Also, for his generosity and huge heart. He gave to every cause! He once gave an enormous donation to one of my wife's fundraisers. She was delighted and could not believe his kindness. Then when he won the raffle of an original work of art, he also donated that to the person that the fundraiser was for! It was Christmas Eve and we will never forget his goodwill and kind spirit.
I enjoyed all of my time at John Heinz with Dick as the Manager. He was a very unique individual. We had many great times and I hope that everyone will remember him for all of his accomplishments at John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge. He fought hard to make the refuge what it is today.
My Sincerest Condolences,
Mike McMenamin Sr

So sorry to learn of Dick's passing. He was a great refuge manager and an unforgettable character. We both managed national wildlife refuges in the Northeast U.S at the same time so I interacted with him at many meetings of fellow managers and our regional staff. I always enjoyed my conversations with him. Dick He was committed to wildlife conservation. His contributions to the national wildlife refuge system were meaningful and are greatly appreciated.

Dick was an outstanding environmental leader and trusted friend. I had the distinct honor of working with Dick when served at Tinicum Wildlife Refuge obtaining funding for the Visitors Center and various programs. Dick’s legacy will live on in all who knew and worked with him.

Dick was the first refuge manager I worked for as a new assistant manager at Supawna Meadows National Wildlife Refuge in Pennsville, New Jersey. Supawna Meadows was then attached administratively with what was then called the Tinicum National Education Center, now John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum. Dick was the perfect selection for the Tinicum job, a maverick manager at an “outside the box” wildlife refuge in an urban setting. He was irreverent and a master of the off-color joke. His sense of humor would never cut it in today’s culture but I suspect he never changed. I appreciate both the leeway and instruction that he gave me as a young and up and coming refuge manager.
Dick loved his wife Andrea and missed her dearly after her untimely passing. He was tremendously proud of his and Andrea’s daughter Michelle. Dick was a true character, one of a kind. Rest In Peace brother. Joe McCauley

Michelle I am so sorry for your loss. I have fond memories when I used to go down to see weiner the pig, and playing when we were kids. I loved seeing all the animals your dad had kept. Its hard to find words of comfort, it's not easy losing a parent. May he rest in peace...much love from Janelle❤️
