Beautiful Gloria, preferring to go by her middle name, June, for most of her life, led a multifaceted, productive, love-filled, lively, and adventurous life. Predeceased by her first husband, Hans Christian Nielsen, with whom she spent twenty-five years raising their four children, Kurt Nielsen, Eric Nielsen (Mera Canolas), Lise’ Nielsen Blackburn (Robert Blackburn), Tina Nielsen Amodeo (Mitchell Smith). Gloria loved tennis, swimming, the arts, theater, travel, gardening, history, and her dogs. An avid tennis player, she played mightily with family and in tennis clubs into her late 70s. Gloria also enjoyed traveling with her family and friends both domestically and abroad.
Born in Cleona, Pennsylvania, Gloria lived most of her life in Cherry Hill, New Jersey and Mullica Hill, New Jersey until she retired to Cape Canaveral, Florida. After graduating from Collingswood High School, Gloria was an actress and model and, throughout the 1970s, directed many local theater productions and worked as a professional wardrobe mistress to stars appearing at local venues like the Latin Casino, the Curtis Institute of Music, and the Cherry Hill Music Fair.
While raising her children, Gloria attended the University of Pennsylvania graduating with a bachelor’s degree in sociology and then went on to obtain her advanced degree as a special education teacher from Glassboro State College. Gloria taught history at Camden County Technical and Vocational School and coached basketball to her students who remember her fondly. She also volunteered her time teaching, reading, and writing to prison inmates in New Jersey and Florida.
