Obituary of Joseph E. Smith

Joseph Edward Smith, 98, of Mullica Hill and Thorofare, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 3, 2022.

Legacy

Joe was born on October 10, 1924 in Pleasantville, NJ to Raymond and Helen (nee Schreider) Smith. Upon graduating Pleasantville High School in 1942, Joe enlisted in the United States Navy and proudly served during WWII in the South Pacific on landing crafts (LST and LSM). Returning home, Joe attended Temple University where he met and married Carol Bowden his wife of 62 years. Joe and Carol settled in Woodbury, NJ and raised their family. Joe worked his entire career for the Exxon Corporation Marine Department in Paulsboro, Baltimore and Norfolk. In retirement, Joe and Carol moved to Virginia Beach, VA where they spent many happy years socializing, entertaining family, and creating beautiful gardens.

Family

Joe is predeceased by his parents, his wife Carol, siblings Raymond, Dolores, Rita, Rose Marie, and grandson Christopher Taylor. Surviving sons Richard (Kathleen), Michael, and daughter Suzanne Taylor; grandchildren Jeffery Taylor (Aimee), Brian Smith (Meghan), Amanda (Brian) Smith and Melissa Smith; and great grandchildren Owen, Ethan, and Alana Taylor.

Farewell Tribute

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his viewing on Saturday, December 10th from 10:00 AM to 10:45 AM in the Infant Jesus Parish at St. Margaret’s Church, 3rd & Beech St. Woodbury Heights, NJ Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM. Followed by a Military graveside in Gloucester County Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Williamstown, NJ.
