Obituary of Dimitri Unkow
Dimitri Unkow, of Blackwood, New Jersey, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, February 8, 2023. He was 76 years old. He is the beloved husband of 47 years to Margaret (Donahue) Unkow, devoted son of Boris and Katja (nee Emgushov) Unkow; loving father of Sean Unkow, devoted brother of Otschir “Rick” Unkow (Debra Lynn), Sofia Kolosowsky (Stanley) and Isabella Kutinow (Gabriel).
Dimitri was born in Krumbach, Germany on April 25, 1946. He grew up in a defunct labor camp during the post war era. He came to America at 10 years young. He played a critical role at this time to help his parents interpret and adapt to American customs. It was during these times he developed a love for the music and movies of that era. The stories he would soon share with his wife, son and family originated from his upbringing during this time.
As a young boy, his parents instilled everlasting ideals in him focusing on education, self-esteem and family. These three things became his foundation for life and he tried to instill these values in everyone he would interact with through all walks of life especially his son Sean. Dimitri knew the importance of experiences/memories and would always encourage Sean to experience as much as he could. Dimitri was a soccer coach for Sean, took Sean to sporting events, vacations, and explored as much as they could. He was a true role model, worked hard to provide for his family. He was passionately persistent.
He served our country in the Army during Vietnam as an expert marksman. He received his MA in business from St. Joseph’s University. Dimitri currently worked as an underwriter for Wilmington Insurance Company in Wilmington, DE.
When he wasn’t working, Dimitri took joy in being with his wife and son most of all but also family and watching them all grow. Dimitri was always so proud of his family’s accomplishments big or small. He knew how to make everyone feel special. He always expressed interest in everyone’s life he encountered and always made a point to inquire on their lives.
