“Legacy” is a very over-used word these days; it seems that everyone and everything has to have one – but with Gail, it’s true. She has left behind a very real legacy, which will impact the nursing profession for a very long time to come.
She was very steadfast in her commitment to Patient Safety and Quality in Healthcare. Her participation on the Advisory Board of the Quality, Safety and Risk Management program at Drexel University, College of Nursing and Health Professions was instrumental in our ability to build a program that has an excellent reputation. In addition to the service on the Advisory Board, she also taught our students and was an active participant in the culminating, on-campus, intensive, immersive simulation experience for our students. She was a rock-star to students and faculty alike, sharing years of experience and insights to seize every teachable moment.
When all is said and done, however much you like your work, it’s the people that you meet in it that really matter and colleagues like Gail are something very special. You don’t come across many of them and when you do, they leave a lasting impression. Peggy Tabor Millin said it best in her poem:
Two separate raindrops on the window pushed by the wind,
merged into one for a moment and then divided again,
each carrying with it a part of the other.
We never touch people so lightly that we do not leave a trace.
Gail touched us all and we will forever be changed--that is her true legacy.
