Obituary of Charles Thomas Neilio
Charles Thomas Neilio Jr., of Franklinville, New Jersey, passed away in his home surrounded by his loved ones on Saturday, November 4, 2023 at the age of 89.
Legacy
"Center City Charlie" as he was most known, was an inspiration to all around him. Charlie was born in Woodbury, NJ to Charles & Elizabeth (nee Fagan) Neilio Sr., on February 16, 1934. Charlie was a student of the world, who adapted many hobbies & talents throughout his life, starting with his first love of gardening. Charlie's green thumb extended over growing tomato plants, fig trees, and extended into canning his own vegetables and creating his signature sauce. He was also a talented wood-maker, creating stain glass window pieces to give to his loved ones, a veteran of the United States Army, as well as associated with Iron Workers Union Local 401.
Charlie was given the nickname "Center City Charlie" from his work in construction & iron work within Philadelphia. With over 40 years of experience working under Cornell & Company Inc., Charlie had helped give Philadelphia's skyline the iconic look that we recognize every day. Creating buildings such as, One Liberty Place, Mellon Bank, 16th and Market, Reading One, Commerce Two, several mid rises throughout the city , Hospitals, Casinos and bridges.One of the last big projects Charlie worked on before retirement was working on the Tire Fire of '96, and can be remembered by those who know him as someone who was always ready to take on the next big project.
Family
Charlie is reunited with is wife of 53 years, MaryEllen (nee Hurff). He is remembered by his children Edward (Kathy) Neilio, Susan (Jeff) Hoffman, and Michelle Neilio, brother Les (Janet) Neilio of Michigan, grandchildren Rachel, Danielle, Eddie, Lauren, Michael, Matthew, Christopher, Ellen, KathyJo Henry, and Morgan, and great-grandchildren Eliana, Jameson, Gabriel, Aramay, Maverick, Nolan, Cole, Jude, Autumn, Willow, and Charlie, as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Predeceased by his son Charles (Karen) Neilio, grandchildren Eddie and Laura.
Farewell Tribute
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his visitation on Saturday, November 18th from 11:00am - 2:00pm, followed by a funeral service at 2:00pm in the McGuinness Funeral Home - Woodbury, 34 Hunter Street. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Veteran Multi-Service Center in Center City Charlie's name at https://www.vmcenter.org/donate/
