Alexander DePutron

Obituary of Alexander William DePutron

Alexander William DePutron, Sr., “Alex” of Mantua, NJ passed away on Wednesday, November 29, 2023. He was 89.

Legacy

Alex was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA. He graduated from Southeast Catholic High School and while attending LaSalle College he entered the United States Army towards the end of the Korean Conflict. He was awarded the Occupation Medal Germany (?), the Good Conduct Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. Following his service in the US Army, Alex returned to the States and married Maryanne Kelly in 1957 sharing 63 years of marriage and raised three children.

Alex owned and operated South Jersey Sports Gallery in Woodbury, NJ which provided embroidered apparel to many local businesses, schools and organizations throughout the South Jersey area. The business was also known for providing hand-sewn personalization and lettering for customers of licensed NFL, MLB, and NHL sports jerseys. Alex started the business in 1983 and it closed in 2016 when he retired. Throughout his years, Alex was involved in umpiring through the Independent Umpires Association which handled most high schools and some colleges in the Southern NJ region. He was tasked with organizing parts of the Bridgeton Invitational Tournament in Bridgeton, NJ. Over a period of 3-4 weeks the event brought together baseball teams from not only the local region but also from several other countries. His passion for baseball and umpiring brought him over 45 years of enjoyment. Alex was extremely passionate about the Mummers and the New Years Day tradition of the Mummers Parade. After being a member of several different String Bands, he found his home at Woodland String Band. While with Woodland, he became an official with the Mummers String Band Association overseeing parts of the Mummers Parade specifically the “judging area” for the performances of the individual String Bands. In 2017, Alex was inducted into the Mummers Museum Hall of Fame String Band Division for his years of service and dedication to the organization. Alex’s camaraderie with many members of different string bands brought him to organize the “Mumnuts”, a group of friends that meets every year prior to the New Years Day Mummers Parade.

Alex was a dog lover and always enjoyed the playful, ruckus behavior of “his dogs” several of which spent every day with him at his business. Alex will be remembered as a passionate man with whom many considered him a mentor throughout their lives. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Alex is the beloved husband of the late Maryanne (nee Kelly); devoted father of Andrew and Maryanne DePutron and Jill Rooney; cherished brother of Donna Barr and David DePutron, D.O. and his wife Barbara; loving companion of Kathleen Leader, her grandchildren and great-grandchild.
