Obituary of Dominick Emilio Salvatore

Born July 19, 1931, Dominick E. “Chubby” Salvatore passed away peacefully on January 14 at the age of 92. Chubby was the beloved husband of the late Josephine (Livecchi). He is survived by his loving children Joanne Siganuk (Steve), Francine Anastasia (Philip), Dominick Salvatore (Michele) and Linda Salvatore. He was the cherished grandfather of Maria Bruno (John), Janine Kelly (Kevin), Dana Callaway (R.J.), Michele Mitchell (Ryan), Dominick Salvatore (Keri), Blasé Salvatore and Philip Salvatore. He glowed with joy in the presence of his 12 great-grandchildren. He also is survived by his long-time companion, Diane Heinz. He was pre-deceased by his dear brothers Louis and Blasé. Chubby was born and raised in South Camden and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School. He served with honor and distinction in the Air Force during the Korean War. He was a medic with a Tactical Reconnaissance unit that was attached to the 4th Fighter Wing. His unit won two battle stars. Chubby was an accomplished saxophone player who performed with the band, The Echoes, on American Bandstand. He had a lifelong love of music especially the old-time sound of saxophone players such as Stan Getz and singers such as Louis Prima. Chubby was the owner of Lou’s Tavern, a popular bar in Camden during the 1970s and 1980s. He later was the owner of Fairview Liquors. Outgoing and sociable, Chubby was the life of the party, always ready with a corny joke and witty aside. He was rarely found without a cigarette in his mouth and a funny comment on his lips. He was a classic city boy who loved to play pool, shoot craps and engage in wise-guy banter. He loved spending time with his family, especially Sunday dinners featuring Josephine’s gravy and macaronis. He was famous for cooking pancake breakfast for his grandchildren when they spent the night. Chubby loved the Jersey Shore and getting ‘comped’ at the casinos in Atlantic City based on his action at the tables. Another favorite spot of his was the boardwalk in Wildwood, where he liked to ride the Tram Car and had a sweet tooth for funnel cakes and Kohr’s Brothers ice cream. Chubby will always be remembered for his zest for life, sense of humor and stubborn insistence on living on his own terms. In accordance with Chubby’s wishes, funeral arrangements will be private.
