Obituary of Joyce Burns

Joyce Mildred (Holtzman) Burns of Woodbury Heights passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday, January 31st 2024 at the age of 97. Joyce was born in Omaha, Nebraska on August 15th 1926 at her grandparents house at only one pound, one ounce. Joyce’s family later moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota where she finished school and graduated with her Bachelor’s in Psychology. Minnesota is where Joyce met her husband Coleman L. Burns. They later moved to Pennsville, New Jersey where they adopted their daughter Anne and son Jason. In 1962, they had a house built in Woodbury Heights, New Jersey where Joyce lived out the rest of her life in. Joyce was very dedicated to both her children. She enjoyed traveling with them and took them to historical places every summer. She would also take trips to Minnesota to visit her parents and her sister Doris who she was very close with. When Joyce’s children were older she started going on trips such as Amsterdam, Israel, and others. She also worked at the Department of Human Services where she was an enforcer of child support for many years until retiring. Joyce loved spending time with her two granddaughters, Chelsea and Sarah. She would rent a shore house in Cape May every summer and take the girls. She also enjoyed taking her granddaughters for the weekends where she would take them on different day trips such as parks, the zoo, malls, Wheaton village and other local places. Later in life she spent time with her great grandchildren. She loved reading and singing to them. She loved them so very much. When Joyce wasn’t spending time with her family she enjoyed reading, listening to music, gardening and watching the birds in her back yard. She enjoyed reading Non fictional books the most, her favorite color was red and some of her favorite singers were Chet Atkinson, Jimmy Buffet and Etta James. Joyce is pre-deceased by her parents Wilburt and Mildred Holtzman as well as her sister Doris C. Brooks. Joyce is survived by her Daughter Anne M. Umstetter(nee Burns), pre-deceased by her Son-In law John W. Umstetter Jr. Survived by her son Jason C. Burns( daughter in law Dawn Burns). Survived by her granddaughter Chelsea Dawson(James). Survived by granddaughter Sarah Burns(Andy). Joyce is also survived by her great grandchildren Augustina, Anthony, Bryson and Callie. All services will be private with close family and friends.
