John is the beloved brother of Anna (Chuck) Ludvig, Howard (Ida) Gwin Jr., Joan (Angel) Gwin, Joseph (Helen) Gwin, and the late George (late Joyce) Gwin. Growing up, John learned how to play the saxophone, playing throughout his youth while attending Neumann High School as the graduating class of 1964. After graduation, John joined the Quaker City String Band & continued his love of music while performing throughout the city of Philadelphia. In 1965, John joined the United States Armed Forces in October representing his country with pride & honor as he fought in the Vietnam War. Later on in life, John became a member of the American Legion Post 281 of Chews Landing.

John met the love of his life, Linda (nee Finnegan) as teenagers & developed a connection that bonded them together for a loving 53 years. Linda and John loved to spend time on the Gulf Coast of Florida relaxing, going shopping together, and simply spending quality time together. The pair decided to share their love and welcome their three loving children into their lives, John Jr., Jennifer (Steven) Coleman, and Su (Kevin) Ballinger. John loved spending time with his family, and especially loved becoming a grandfather to Sabrena, Kyle, Madison, Meagan, Ava, and his grand-dogs.
