Obituary of John T. Margie, Sr.
John T. Margie, "Semper Fidelis" age 91, of Oak Valley, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 25, 2019.
Legacy
Originally from Wilkes-Barre, PA, joined the United States Marines Corps in 1948, fought in the Battle of Chosin Reservoir in 1950. He survived a difficult bout with polio, and eventually found a permanent home in the Oak Valley section of Deptford Township. He worked in the fourth Naval District in Philadelphia and had a lengthy volunteer career with Oak Valley baseball and with the Gloucester County Parks and Recreation Advisory Council.
Born in Wilkes-Barre, PA, Margie was the administrative officer, Naval Seas Systems Command, "Mothball Fleet," Philadelphia Naval Base, prior to retiring from federal service, Navy Department with 47 years of combined Marine and Naval service in 1995.
For a lifetime, Margie could be counted on for countless volunteer community service endeavors.
Some highlights: Gloucester County Sports Hall of Fame executive committee (he was enshrined in 1988); Deptford Commission on Aging; Deptford Recreation Commission; Deptford Board of Education; Oak Valley Athletic Association baseball manager 30 years; and Gloucester Tri-League Commissioner 30 years. That's to name just a few.
His awards were voluminous.
On November 21, 2018, he received the new Legacy Park award, which is the highest honor bestowed on a Deptford Township citizen - for his many years of service to the community.
Some highlights: Legion of Honor, Chapel of Four Chaplains, NJ Volunteer of Year Awards from two governors; National Shipmate of the Year, Fleet Reserve Association; Human Goals Award, Commander, Naval Sea Systems Command, Washington; Man of Year, Oak ValleyAthletic Association.; Deptford Citizen of the Year, John Margie Day, Deptford; John Margie Baseball Field dedication; Gloucester County Times Best and Brightest; John Margie College Scholarship and proclamations from the Freeholds, Senate, and Assembly. That's just to name only a few. He's been immersed as a volunteer for fraternal organizations; Co-founder of the Semper Fidelis Detachment, Marine Corps League, Wenonah; American Legion, VFW, Disabled American Vet; Fleet Reserve Association; Chosin Few (Survivors of Chosin Reservoir, Korea, 1950).
Family
He is the beloved husband of Olive Margie (nee. Mercer). Devoted father of Linda, John, Jr., Donna (Richard), Kathleen (Joe), Paul (Nichole), Harry (Linda) and Sue (Michael). Treasured grandfather of Matthew (Stephanie), Katherine, John III, Nicole, Adam, Aimee, Bryan, Robert, Anthony, Emily, Charlie, Abby, John, Blake, Danny and Olivia. Son of the late Frances and Edward Margie. Dear Brother of Edward F. He will be missed by many friends and family.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his viewing on Sunday, September 29th from 4:00PM to 7:00PM in the McGuinness Funeral Home-Woodbury, 34 Hunter Street, Woodbury, NJ 08096. In ST. MARGARET"S CHURCH Monday, September 30th a viewing from 10:00AM to 10:45AM. Funeral Mass 11:00AM. Interment will be private.
