Thoughts of Mary take me back to more gentle days. Reunions at poppop and grandmom's. The chicken coupe we were all forbidden to enter....never happen! blackberry picking... the way Mary tilted her head when she smiled...later, a greeter at our "Soupy Island" reunions...her hands on her hips while giving us "an order" or direction. I admire her for her determination and strength....never willing to give up.

I worked with Mary and counted her as one of my best friends. Sadly, after she retired, I saw less and less of her. The last time I'd seen her we met for coffee at a book shop in Deptford. I remember fondly that that meeting was filled with laughter ...I can't begin to say how much I am going to miss this complex, intelligent, dynamic woman.

To the family of Mary, Mary touched my life in many ways. We had so many fun times together at work and the many parties we attended. She was the ultimate social worker, union member, and woman's rights advocate. She was also the smartest person I have ever met. I will always remember her with my respect and friendship.

I worked with Mary for a number of years and was her supervisor. She was a very generous and compassionate person. Her work was demanding, yet she did her job in a professional and caring manor. Mary had the awesome responsibility of placing disabled individuals out of institutions and placing them into community homes. We had a slogan in our unit that was placed above Mary's cubicle. It said, "Place and Run". For many staff that saw the slogan, they thought it meant place the disabled individual and run like hell before trouble starts. But Mary knew the true meaning of the slogan was to place the disabled individual and run like hell to place another disabled person out of the institution because Mary was changing a person's life for the better. Most of us may never get the chance to make a real difference in another person's life. For Mary, it was her passion and she did it well.
I plan to ride my bicycle in July of this year for the American Cancer Society. I will place Mary's name on the back of my jersey and ride to honor her and thank her for of the good she gave to this world.

Mary and I were shoved into a cubicle like a foot in a new shoe in the old office. Never have two so vastly different people shared such a cramped work space. What developed was an immediate respect for our differences and similarities. From that, a friendship that my wife and I valued. Mary was devoted to her family, friends and beliefs. She was a remarkable person who is missed. She made a difference.

Greetings,
This is to acknowledge the passing of Mary, who I never had the privilege of meeting, and Lillian, Mary's courageous, loving and generous sister who stayed by her side these past few difficult years. Lillian, you are a model of what it is to "be there" for another. And, while I can only begin to appreciate the pain it is for you and your Mom that Mary is gone, I know that the gift you gave to Mary -- the gift of yourself and your love and compassion and time -- will sustain you in the years ahead. Thank you for being such a blessed inspiration for the rest of us. I love you deeply.

Though I never met Mary, I came to love her as "Lillian's younger sister." I know Lillian was devoted to Mary and treasured her as a "soul sister." I know Mary's death is a loss...a finality for the whole family. My mother and I send our love to everyone in the family. Love, Judy Billman
