Obituary of Ellen Marie O'Laughlin
An ordinary woman led an extraordinary life whose legacy won’t fully be appreciated for generations. Ellen Marie O’Laughlin passed away on March 22, 2021 surrounded by her family. A child of the Depression and a teen during WWII, our mother never let hardship define her or alter her loving nature. A devoted wife to Joseph P. O’Laughlin, Jr. for 57 years, an incredible mother to six children for a longer period of time, an affectionate grandmother to twelve, and a caring great-grandmother to 3 1/2, her love was equal to the task. As a teen, she decided she wanted a college education so after being awarded a scholarship she took two buses and a trolley to get there. Courted by a man who made her feel like the most beautiful woman “Every day of my life,” She married happily and never stopped raising and loving her six children. She was a teacher, both in school and by example. Her legacy is in the hands of her children, with her direction that we love and take care of each other. It is in the hands of her grandchildren, who she taught to make pies and to love seeing each other at Sunday breakfast. And it is in the hands of her great-grandchildren who felt her love and who will be told endless stories of this amazing woman in the years to come that will make them miss her even more. Ellen O’Laughlin was truly grateful for everything that life had given her, good and bad. She was grace under pressure. She always told us that she was blessed, so blessed. But we were the ones who were blessed. God bless you, Mom.
